On Sun 5 Feb at 10:00 we gathered together at our clubhouse Thúskomme for the 150km ride to Hoogerheide. What a beautiful and sunny day it was to see the cyclo-pros in action, so up close and in person! The place was fully packed and the crowd was outrageous!
Cyclo-Cross is a very spectacular form of bike racing that has become more and more popular in the last few years. The best riders of the world (men and women) race over rough terrain for several repeating laps. Mud, sand, sliding and slipping guaranteed!
It started with the race of the ‘Women under 23’. Shirin van Anrooij claimed the role of absolute favourite. And all that on her 21st birthday!
After the women it was time for the most hotly anticipated race of the weekend that everybody had been waiting for: the ‘Men Elite’ with the big clash of the season between Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert. They pushed each other to the limit and it certainly lived up to its billing, as Mathieu van der Poel outsprinted Wout van Aert to win his fifth world title after a thrilling ten-lap tactical duel.
After the prize ceremony we walked back to our cars for a ride back to Amsterdam, reliving the spectacle together.
What a super cool story both men are writing. And it’s not the end: there’s definitely something to look forward to with the new road cycling season starting soon!
