On Wednesday 15 June road cycling legend Steven Rooks treated us on some amazing cycling stories and gave us essential tips and tricks during a 2-hour clinic.
Steven is one of our greatest Dutch road racing champions: His outstanding cycling skills brought him many impressive victories; among them are the L’Alpe d’Huez during the Tour de France and the polka dot jersey for the mountains classification. Other wins include Liège–Bastogne–Liège, the Tour de Luxembourg and Amstel Gold Race, and the National Championship.
We could literally ask Steven anything about his 14-year career in road cycling. He was enthusiastic to tell us everything and take us back to the days where cyclists were very much dependent on their own common sense. Steven for example made his own training schedules, and there was no big sponsor to pay you a large salary or even supply you with the best bike around. So it seems as a pro cyclist in the 80’s/90’s your passion and drive for the sports had to be really, really huge if you wanted to reach and stay at the top.
We finished the clinic with some fast rounds on the track, while Steven gave us individual feedback on position, pedaling and steering.
Impressive guy, great clinic. Thanks Steven!
